There is a huge problem here. But instead of yelling FASCIST! (never very productive) I think it is important to think through the issue.

I agree that the California requirement that teachers be credentialed is retarded. Credentialing has never been a guarantee of teacher quality, nor has it ever guaranteed that children will be educated. 100s of thousands of kids graduate from CA public schools and are totally uneducated.

That being said, I think the state does have a right to make sure that kids are getting educated in home schools. While most home schools are far superior to public schools, there are some where kids are learning very little (certain fundamentalist sects and such.) That is a form of child neglect and a detriment to the public. So I think there should be some basic standards or tests, which most most homeschool kids would easily pass.

Testing homeschool kids would not only light a fire under public school butts, it would give the homeschool movement legitimacy.

It's all about smart regulation, not no regulation.

I agree but realize that in some areas more than half of PUBLIC school kids fail those tests. What is the state going to do if a home school kid fails? Force them to go to public school? If a public school kid fails they are eventually graduated to the next grade...you can't treat home schoolers differently.

Testing homeschool kids would not only light a fire under public school butts, it would give the homeschool movement legitimacy.

This happens...somewhat. Any home school kid looking to go to college in Texas (and elsewhere I am certain) has to take a basic standardized test much like the TAKS since they didn't take in high school.

It's all about smart regulation, not no regulation.

And also FAIR regulation...
